PENSACOLA, FL – Charles E. Posey, Jr., 33, of Pensacola, Florida, will spend the next 26.5 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a litany of drug trafficking and firearms offenses. The sentence, handed down Wednesday, marks a significant victory for federal and local law enforcement battling the relentless flow of narcotics and illegal weapons into the Florida Panhandle.
According to court documents, the bust originated December 3, 2020, at a Pensacola residence overflowing with illicit goods. Authorities discovered over $20,000 in cash, ten firearms, and substantial quantities of cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana. Posey was present at the scene, and his white Lexus became a focal point of the investigation. A search of the vehicle uncovered even more methamphetamine and marijuana, alongside a Glock .40 caliber pistol equipped with a high-capacity “drum” magazine containing 27 rounds of ammunition.
U.S. Attorney Jason R. Coody didn’t mince words, stating, “Those who repeatedly commit serious crimes are deserving of significant prison sentences. This career criminal has demonstrated his unwillingness to abide by the law, committing repeated drug crimes.” Coody emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, noting that the successful prosecution was a direct result of the combined work of state, local, and federal agencies.
This isn’t Posey’s first brush with the law. Records show he’s a multi-convicted felon with prior state prison sentences for similar drug trafficking and firearms offenses. The repeat offender clearly ignored previous warnings and continued to engage in criminal activity, leading to the lengthy federal sentence. Following his prison term, Posey will face an additional five years of supervised release.
“This sentencing is great news for the Florida Panhandle communities,” said Cheryl Harrell, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Tampa Field Division. “A dangerous felon – a repeat drugs and firearms offender — will be locked up for a long time, thanks to our incredible partnership with Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office-Northern District of Florida.” The ATF and Escambia County Sheriff’s Office jointly investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys David L. Goldberg and Kaitlin Weiss handling the prosecution.
The case is part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN) initiative, a program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. As part of the PSN strategy, the U.S. Attorney’s Office is urging residents of the Northern District of Florida to take a simple but crucial step: lock your car doors. Authorities say unlocked vehicles are a major source of firearms for criminals in the region.
