Gettysburg Man Sentenced for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon

A brutal assault in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has led to a 30-month prison sentence for a local man. On August 24, 2017, Christopher Arpan, age 52, of Gettysburg, South Dakota, beat another individual about the head with a wooden cane, resulting in serious bodily harm.

The victim, who was bleeding from a head wound, required multiple staples to close five wounds sustained to his head. Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe law enforcement was dispatched to the scene, leading to Arpan's indictment by a federal grand jury on November 14, 2017.

Arpan pleaded guilty to Assault with a Dangerous Weapon on June 12, 2018. In a federal courtroom, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced Arpan to 30 months in federal prison, 2 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

The investigation into the assault was conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case, bringing Arpan to justice for his heinous crime.

Arpan was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing. This case serves as a reminder of the severity of violent crimes and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
