Leader of Methamphetamine Conspiracy Pleads Guilty in Abingdon, Virginia

ABINGDON, Va. – A notorious methamphetamine kingpin has been brought to justice in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia. Christopher David Johnson, 46, pleaded guilty last week to charges related to a wide-ranging methamphetamine conspiracy.

Johnson, currently incarcerated in Georgia, was found to have led a sophisticated operation that trafficked and distributed multiple kilograms of methamphetamine into Southwest Virginia. Despite being behind bars, Johnson used multiple cell phones and social media platforms, including Facebook and text messaging, to direct the operation and coordinate with co-conspirators.

As part of the conspiracy, Johnson communicated with co-defendant Michael Paul Brown, who was sentenced to 180 months of imprisonment for his role in the conspiracy. The investigation revealed that Johnson and Brown worked together to traffic and distribute large quantities of methamphetamine, with Johnson directing the operation from his prison cell.

The guilty plea is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trade in Southwest Virginia. The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and multiple law enforcement agencies in Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia, has resulted in the disruption of a major trafficking operation.

According to the indictment, Johnson faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a statutory maximum of life. The sentencing date has not been announced.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Corey Hall and Whit Pierce. United States Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh and Jared Forget, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA's Washington Division, made the announcement.
