New York Crime: Port Authority Cop Fakes Injury, Collects $31,486.66 in Disability Payments

A veteran Port Authority Police Officer has been arrested for mail fraud after allegedly faking a debilitating work-related injury to his right arm and collecting over $31,000 in disability payments from an insurance company.

Christopher Inserra, a five-year veteran of the Port Authority Police Department, was charged in a federal complaint unsealed in Brooklyn federal court on [June 1, 2010] with mail fraud in connection with his scheme to defraud American Family Life Assurance Company of New York (AFLAC).

According to the complaint, Inserra repeatedly and falsely claimed to medical personnel that he suffered a debilitating injury to the lower bicep and elbow region of his right arm, causing him excruciating pain and difficulty moving his right arm.

Inserra's scheme was uncovered after law enforcement agents located and downloaded multiple photographs and video footage of his band, Cousin Sleaze, performing at various venues during the same time period that he was classified as injured on duty (IOD) and collecting disability payments.

The photographs and video footage showed Inserra frequently moving his right arm in a violent back and forth manner, inconsistent with the severe level of pain and loss of mobility that he had falsely reported to medical personnel.

Inserra's arrest was announced by Loretta E. Lynch, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Keith E. Milke, Acting Inspector-in-Charge, United States Postal Inspection Service, New York, and Robert Van Etten, Inspector General for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Inserra is scheduled to be arraigned later today before United States Magistrate Judge Robert M. Levy at the U.S. Courthouse, Brooklyn, New York.
