Christopher Lee Yates, Stolen Firearms, West Virginia 2019
A ruthless thief has been brought to justice in West Virginia. Christopher Lee Yates, a 52-year-old man from Martinsburg, has been charged with stealing firearms from a U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) facility.
According to court documents, Yates, a former contract security guard at the ATF facility, was accused of possessing and selling stolen firearms in Berkeley County in February 2019. Additionally, he is accused of stealing firearms, firearms parts, and ammunition valuing more than $1,000 from the ATF's National Disposal Branch in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Yates faces up to 10 years incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for each count. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey A. Finucane is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the crime.
An indictment is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
