Clifford Allen Angle, Methamphetamine Distribution, West Virginia 2017

Published June 5, 2019

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - In a major blow to the state's fight against illicit drugs, a Georgia man has been sentenced to 151 months in federal prison for his role in methamphetamine trafficking. Clifford Allen Angle, 32, was found guilty of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine following a thorough investigation by the Charleston Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

According to court documents, Angle was arrested on August 1, 2017, in downtown Charleston with a firearm and a quantity of methamphetamine. Pursuant to his plea agreement, he admitted to traveling from Georgia with approximately two ounces of methamphetamine to distribute in West Virginia. He also admitted to having two prior drug trafficking convictions.

United States Attorney Mike Stuart weighed in on the sentence, stating, “Drug dealers need to understand, West Virginia isn’t the place to bring your drugs and guns.” He emphasized the severity of the sentence, noting that it serves as a clear warning to those involved in illicit drug activities.

In imposing the sentence, United States District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin cited the defendant’s extensive criminal history, as well as the lenient sentences previously imposed upon him in state court. The judge deemed the sentence of 151 months in federal prison to be appropriate.

The investigation into Angle’s activities was a collaborative effort between the Charleston Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Steve Loew handled the prosecution.

The West Virginia community can rest a little easier knowing that another individual involved in illicit drug activities has been held accountable for their actions. This sentence serves as a reminder that those who engage in drug trafficking will face severe consequences.
