Threats Against Jewish Institutions Land Maryland Man Behind Bars
PHILADELPHIA – In a shocking turn of events, Clift Seferlis, a 55-year-old man from Garrett Park, Maryland, has pleaded guilty to sending threatening communications to Jewish institutions in the region. The disturbing crimes, which spanned over a year, have left the community shaken.
Seferlis, who was arrested in June, admitted to sending at least 40 threatening letters and postcards to more than 25 Jewish organizations and entities located in multiple jurisdictions. The communications, which were sent via the United States Postal Service, included threats to destroy physical buildings and injure individuals.
According to court filings, Seferlis caused the U.S. Postal Service to deliver threatening communications to several institutions, including synagogues, Jewish museums, and community centers. The defendant's actions were intended to intimidate and disrupt the free exercise of religious beliefs by congregants and attendees.
Seferlis, who waived venue as to institutions not in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, faces a maximum possible sentence of 169 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $5,650,000 fine. The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced on March 16.
The case was investigated by the FBI Philadelphia, with assistance from the FBI Baltimore, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Montgomery County (Md.) Police Department, and the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland's Greenbelt office. The Anti-Defamation League, Secure Community Network, and Delaware Valley Intelligence Center also provided assistance with this case.
