Published July 22, 2021

A brazen robbery at a convenience store in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, ended with a swift conviction and a lengthy sentence. Colton White Feather, a 26-year-old man from the same city, was sentenced to 52 months in federal prison for his role in the crime.

According to court documents, White Feather entered the convenience store on December 24, 2020, wearing a black baseball cap, a grey hoodie sweatshirt, a dark blue bandana, jeans, and white tennis shoes. The combination of the hoodie, baseball cap, and bandana covered much of his face. He was brandishing a knife and demanded that the store clerk open the cash register.

The clerk complied, and White Feather grabbed money from the register and demanded cigarettes. The clerk handed over the cigarettes, and White Feather fled the scene. The entire ordeal lasted mere minutes, but it had a lasting impact on the community.

This case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case. White Feather was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.

White Feather was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 12, 2021, and pleaded guilty on April 26, 2021. The conviction stemmed from the December 24, 2020, incident at the convenience store. He was sentenced by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, on July 19, 2021.

As part of his sentence, White Feather will also serve three years of supervised release and pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100. The dollar amount of restitution was left open for 60 days. The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the need to hold perpetrators accountable.

The community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that justice has been served. The swift conviction and sentence send a clear message that robbery will not be tolerated in Eagle Butte or anywhere else in South Dakota. The people have a right to feel safe, and it is the duty of law enforcement and the justice system to ensure that right is protected.
