Corey Dewayne Hughes, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Alabama 2018
A Mobile County man has been sentenced to 110 months in prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation in the area.
Corey Dewayne Hughes, a 42-year-old resident of Mobile, Alabama, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Kristi K. DuBose on September 28, 2018, for possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine in violation of Title 21 USC § 841(a)(1).
The defendant's conviction comes after a lengthy investigation by the Mobile County Street Enforcement Narcotics Team (MCSENT) into Hughes' activities. On April 21, 2017, officers from MCSENT executed a search warrant at Hughes' residence in Mobile County, where they recovered approximately 544 grams of pure methamphetamine.
According to court documents, the officers had made several controlled buys from Hughes at his residence prior to the search warrant being executed. In addition to the methamphetamine, officers also recovered a number of firearms during the search.
Hughes had previously pleaded guilty to the offense on August 16, 2017. The defendant's prior convictions include rape in the second degree, assault in the second degree, and dog-fighting.
The case was investigated by Mobile County Street Enforcement Narcotics Team and referred for federal prosecution through the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations. The case was prosecuted by Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Lead Attorney, George F. May for the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Alabama.
Hughes will serve a term of imprisonment of 110 months followed by 5 years of supervised release. The defendant is currently in federal custody and will begin serving his sentence immediately.
