Cumberland County, Sexual Harassment, Tennessee 2023

Cumberland County, Tennessee, has been rocked by a shocking case of serial sexual harassment involving ten female employees.

According to a recent settlement with the Justice Department, the county will pay approximately $1.1 million in compensatory damages to the victims, who were subjected to unwanted sexual contact, unwelcome sexual advances, and offensive sexual remarks by the former director of the county's Solid Waste Department.

The former director, whose name was not disclosed, has been indicted on criminal charges and is awaiting trial in state court.

The Justice Department filed a complaint on March 8, 2023, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, alleging that Cumberland County failed to take adequate precautions to prevent the former director from harassing the women.

The county will also revise its policies, procedures, and training to better prevent sexual harassment in the workplace.

The settlement is part of the Civil Rights Division's Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Initiative, which aims to eradicate sexual harassment in state and local government workplaces.
