Dajuan Simonton, Gun Possession by Convicted Felon, Kentucky 2022

Published December 22, 2022

A 29-year-old Louisville man has been charged with possessing a handgun after having previously been convicted of multiple felony offenses.

Dajuan Simonton, a Louisville resident, is accused of violating federal law by possessing the firearm on January 12, 2022, after having been convicted of receiving stolen firearms, complicity to possession of a controlled substance in first degree, complicity to receiving stolen property, and tampering with physical evidence.

The indictment alleges that Simonton's prior felony convictions render him ineligible to possess a firearm under federal law.

Simonton is currently in custody at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections on unrelated charges. Once his state charges are resolved, he will make his initial court appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky.

If convicted, Simonton faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The case is being investigated by the ATF and FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Alicia P. Gomez prosecuting the case.

The charges against Simonton are part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the communities they serve.

An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The case is notable for highlighting the ongoing efforts to address gun violence and reduce violent crime in the Louisville community.
