Felonies committed in Kings Canyon National Park have serious consequences, as evidenced by the case of Dallas John Fonseca.

Fonseca, 43, of Visalia, California, pleaded guilty to felony theft in Kings Canyon National Park, announced U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott.

On February 9, a piece of jewelry and a Rolex watch were left with the manager of the John Muir Lodge for safekeeping. However, sometime between February 9 and March 11, Fonseca, who worked at the Lodge, stole the valuable items.

The thief was caught after being captured on surveillance footage selling the Rolex to a local pawn shop.

Fonseca is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd on February 24, 2020. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

The actual sentence will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account various variables.

This case is the product of an investigation by the National Park Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Barton is prosecuting the case.

Felonies committed in national parks are taken seriously, and those who commit such crimes must face the consequences. In this case, Fonseca's actions have led to serious charges and potential penalties.
