Dane Darbonne, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Louisiana 2024
A Lake Charles man has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm after leading police on a high-speed chase through the city.
According to a guilty plea entered in federal court on Monday, Dane Darbonne, 29, was in possession of a Savage Model 110 caliber, 30-06 rifle on August 10, 2018, when he purchased it from another individual.
The next day, Darbonne led Lake Charles police officers in a vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash. He fled the scene, but officers recovered the rifle from the vehicle Darbonne was driving.
Darbonne is a convicted felon with a history of violent crimes, including possession of a firearm in a firearm-free zone, assault by drive-by-shooting, and attempted manslaughter.
Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of a firearm or ammunition.
Darbonne faces up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
The ATF and the Lake Charles Police Department conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Dominic Rossetti prosecuting the case.
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an evidence-based program aimed at reducing violent crime, is the centerpiece of the government's violent crime reduction efforts.
