Daniel Brown, Manslaughter, South Dakota 2019
A Bullhead man was sentenced to federal prison for his role in a deadly car accident. Daniel Brown, 29, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after a jury found him responsible for the death of Dionne Brown Otter.
According to court documents, Brown lost control of his crew cab truck while driving under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance on September 8, 2018. The truck rolled down an unmaintained hill, causing the death of Dionne Brown Otter and serious injuries to another individual.
Brown had a blood alcohol content of .22 percent and methamphetamine in his system at the time of the accident. The reckless driving resulted in the death of Dionne Brown Otter, who was a passenger in the truck.
On December 16, 2019, U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann sentenced Brown to 60 months in federal prison, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release. Brown was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs - Office of Justice Services, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy Jehangiri prosecuted the case.
Brown was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of prioritizing road safety.
