Ex-Fugitive Sentenced to 9 Years in Prison for Pharmacy Burglary and Firearms Offenses
BURLINGTON, VERMONT - In a federal court in Burlington, Vermont, on August 2, 2019, Daniel Greenwood, 43, was sentenced to 90 months in jail for his involvement in a pharmacy burglary and firearms offenses. The indictment against Greenwood was the culmination of a multi-agency investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms; the Drug Enforcement Administration; and the Vermont State Police.
The investigation found that on October 15, 2017, Greenwood burglarized the Kinney Drugs pharmacy in Cambridge, Vermont, stealing over $500 in controlled substances. Additionally, Greenwood was charged with possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, stemming from a burglary of a residence in Thetford, Vermont, on October 21, during which he attempted to steal the homeowner’s hunting rifle.
Greenwood had absconded from state supervision and was a fugitive during late 2017. He was arrested in late 2017 in Massachusetts and charged in connection with another burglary offense for which he is currently serving a sentence.
According to the charges, Greenwood has a prior federal firearms conviction. The pharmacy burglary charge is a federal crime because Greenwood is alleged to have stolen over $500 in controlled substances during the burglary, which occurred on the night of October 15 when the pharmacy was closed.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making our neighborhoods safer for everyone. Assistant United States Attorney Paul J. Van de Graaf prosecuted the case, while Greenwood was represented by Attorney Karen Shingler.
In total, the collaborative effort involved the assistance of the United States Marshals Service, Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations, the Newport Police Department, the Lamoille and Orleans County Sheriffs, and the Holyoke, Massachusetts, Police Department.
Greenwood’s sentence marks a significant victory for law enforcement and the community in the fight against violent crime. As part of the PSN program, federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies work together to develop effective, locally-based strategies to reduce violent crime.
