Baltimore Woman Admits to Fentanyl Trafficking Charges in West Virginia

A Baltimore woman has admitted to supplying fentanyl to dealers in West Virginia, according to a recent federal court proceeding.

Daniela Marie Giancoli, 34, of Baltimore, Maryland, pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl. The charges stem from an investigation by the Potomac Highlands Drug Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, which revealed that Giancoli worked with co-defendant Michael Matthews to sell drugs to more than 10 dealers in the area.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Giancoli supplied large amounts of fentanyl to dealers in Grant County and elsewhere. The investigation uncovered nearly 9,000 fentanyl pills, weighing more than two kilograms.

Giancoli and Matthews worked together out of their Baltimore apartment to facilitate the distribution of the deadly opioid. The operation was brought to light through a joint effort between law enforcement agencies, which led to the recovery of the illicit substances and the subsequent arrest of Giancoli and Matthews.

Giancoli is facing up to 20 years in federal prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Michael Matthews, co-defendant, pled guilty in 2023 and will be sentenced in April. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Warner prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
