Danny Joel Hummel, Possession of Child Pornography, Iowa 2013

A disturbing case of child exploitation has shaken the community in Essex, Iowa, as Danny Joel Hummel, a 59-year-old resident, was sentenced to six months in prison for possession of child pornography.

The crime was reported on February 15, 2013, when Hummel pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of child pornography.

The investigation, which was conducted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Cyber Crimes Unit, began after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children advised law enforcement agencies that an Essex, Iowa, resident was in possession of child pornography.

Law enforcement officials located several computers in Hummel’s residence upon which numerous images and videos containing child pornography were found.

Hummel's activities will be monitored by officers of the United States Probation Office for the Southern District of Iowa while on supervised release for the next ten years.

The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

In handing down the sentence, Nicholas A. Klinefeldt announced the outcome, which reflects the seriousness with which the court views such crimes.

The community can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served, but the impact of such crimes can last a lifetime.
