Dante Johnson Sentenced to 15 Years for Voluntary Manslaughter in South Dakota
Eagle Butte, SD - Dante Johnson, an Eagle Butte man, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for Voluntary Manslaughter and Discharging a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence.
On January 12, 2019, Johnson fired a gun, prompting the victim to exit his residence to investigate. As the victim approached, Johnson pointed a handgun at him and shot him in the chest, causing the victim's death.
Johnson was arrested and charged with Voluntary Manslaughter and Discharging a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence. He pleaded guilty to the charges on June 1, 2020, and was subsequently sentenced on August 17, 2020.
The conviction is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, which aims to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer. It also falls under the Project Guardian initiative, a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing gun violence and enforcing federal firearms laws.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case, and Johnson was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Johnson's sentence includes 15 years in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $200.
