Pittsburgh Man Pleads Guilty to Bank Robbery
A Pittsburgh resident pleaded guilty to a charge of bank robbery in federal court, announced United States Attorney Scott W. Brady. Darryl Leon Wilson, 61, pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery before United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer.
The bank robbery occurred on February 22, 2018, at a Key Bank in downtown Pittsburgh. Wilson entered the bank wearing a purple hat and scarf covering most of his face. When the teller requested that he remove the scarf and hat, Wilson stated, 'If I don’t get out of here fast, someone will get hurt.' He then placed a note on the counter that read, 'Someone will get shot if you don’t give the 100’s 50’s 20’s and 10’s, No dye packs, smile and move fast Sorry.'
The teller gave Wilson $540 in loose $20 and $5 bills. Surveillance video from surrounding businesses, including the Warner Center, was used to identify Wilson. On March 2, 2018, officers went to Wilson’s house and found him at the door with his hands up. Wilson admitted to robbing the bank and stated, 'I did it.' He also admitted to giving the teller the note and using the money to pay back borrowed money and purchase a cellphone.
According to the court, Wilson used the money to pay back borrowed money and purchase a cellphone. He also discarded the scarf, knit cap, and skirt after the robbery and walked through downtown Pittsburgh before catching a bus. When arrested, Wilson was wearing the same tennis shoes he wore during the robbery.
Wilson faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Judge Fischer scheduled sentencing for March 7, 2019. Wilson is currently being detained pending sentencing.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police conducted the investigation that led to Wilson’s prosecution. Assistant United States Attorney Shanicka L. Kennedy is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
Wilson’s case serves as a reminder of the severity of bank robbery and the consequences of committing such a crime. Bank robbery is a serious offense that can result in significant penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and substantial fines.
