A Slidell man has been caught in a web of deceit, pleading guilty to making false statements in an application for a passport. Darryl Sanders, a 62-year-old resident of Slidell, Louisiana, has been accused of using a fake identity to obtain a passport.
According to court documents, Sanders knowingly made false statements in an application for a 2018 U.S. Passport when he falsely claimed his name was Daryl Saunders, with a date of birth of 09/03/XXXX.
The investigation into Sanders' false passport application was conducted by the U.S. Department of State, Diplomatic Security Service and the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General. The case is being handled by Assistant U. S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba, Supervisor of the Financial Crimes Unit.
Sanders faces a maximum penalty of ten (10) years imprisonment, followed by up to three (3) years of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000.00, and a mandatory $100 special assessment as to each count.
U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser praised the work of the agencies involved in the investigation, stating that their efforts have helped to bring a perpetrator of identity theft to justice.
Sanders is scheduled to be sentenced on September 10, 2019, before U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey. The court will determine the extent of Sanders' punishment, which could include imprisonment, fines, and supervised release.
