Gun Crimes on the Rise in Fort Wayne
A 23-year-old man from Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Dashawn Jones, a resident of Fort Wayne, pleaded guilty to the felony offense and was ordered to serve his sentence concurrently with any remaining un-discharged term of imprisonment as dictated by Allen County Superior Court. He will also serve 2 years of supervised release following his imprisonment.
The investigation into Jones’ activities was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Geller. In December 2012, Jones was discovered to be in possession of a firearm during a residence check, which led to his arrest and subsequent charges.
Jones’ prior conviction for burglary serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of recidivism in our community. It is crucial that we continue to work towards reducing gun violence and ensuring the safety of our citizens.
In related news, a second defendant was sentenced in federal court for their involvement in a conspiracy to distribute and possess controlled substances with the intent to distribute. Antonio Sewell, a 31-year-old resident of Fort Wayne, was sentenced to 76 months imprisonment and 4 years supervised release for conspiring to distribute cocaine.
Sewell’s case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was also prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Geller. The investigation revealed that Sewell maintained a place for the purpose of distributing cocaine, further highlighting the need for continued efforts to combat the scourge of drug trafficking in our community.
The sentences handed down in these cases serve as a reminder of the serious consequences of engaging in gun crimes and drug trafficking. As a community, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to prevent these crimes and keep our citizens safe.
The United States Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to combat gun violence and drug trafficking in Fort Wayne and beyond.
