Armed Career Criminal Sentenced to 188 Months in Prison

Yakima, Washington, February 2013 - David Allen Vickers, a 40-year-old resident of Yakima, Washington, was sentenced to 188 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, Michael C. Ormsby, Vickers was found to be an armed career criminal due to his lengthy criminal history, which includes convictions for violent crimes and drug trafficking.

On January 19, 2012, Vickers attempted to rob a convenience store in Yakima, armed with a shotgun. The store owner grabbed the shotgun during the struggle, and it discharged, but Vickers was eventually taken into custody by the Yakima Police Department.

Vickers pleaded guilty to the charge of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm on October 4, 2012. He has been in custody since his arrest.

Senior District Court Judge Fred Van Sickle handed down the sentence, which includes a 5-year term of court supervision upon release from federal prison.

Michael C. Ormsby stated, 'The United States Attorney's Office, the Yakima Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are committed to working in partnership to protect communities from convicted felons who possess firearms and endanger the lives of citizens within the Eastern District of Washington.'

He emphasized the importance of seeking assistance from law enforcement officials rather than confronting and engaging armed criminals.

The case was investigated by the Yakima Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Tom Hanlon prosecuted the case.
