David Cummings, Counterfeiting, Iowa 2019

A Waterloo man, David Cummings, has been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for passing $300 worth of counterfeit money to six Cedar Rapids businesses.

The 38-year-old Cummings, originally from Chicago, Illinois, pleaded guilty on September 27, 2018, to passing counterfeit currency.

In June 2018, Cummings passed counterfeit $50 bills to six Cedar Rapids businesses.

Cummings has a significant criminal history, including convictions for attempted murder and armed robbery, as well as numerous parole and probation violations.

He was sentenced on April 2, 2019, by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams and ordered to make $300 in restitution.

Cummings must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Cummings is being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew J. Cole and Justin Lightfoot, and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
