Monmouth County Man Caught with Modified Machine Gun

TRENTON, N.J. – In a shocking turn of events, Davon Harley, 30, of Neptune City, New Jersey, has been charged with possessing a machine gun as a previously convicted felon. This incident occurred on February 8, 2020, when Harley was apprehended by local authorities following a confrontation at an apartment complex.

According to documents filed in this case, Harley was involved in an argument with others in the yard of the apartment complex. As the situation escalated, Harley fled through the complex and discarded a handgun that had been modified to fire exclusively in fully automatic mode. The weapon, which had a magazine capable of holding 31 rounds of ammunition, was later recovered by law enforcement officers assisted by the Neptune Township and Asbury Park police departments.

Harley, a previously convicted felon, is now facing serious consequences. He has been charged with one count of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and one count of possession of a machinegun. Each of these charges carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Harley appeared in court by video conference and was detained without bail. The case is part of Project Stop the Violence, a comprehensive strategy to combat gun crimes in Monmouth County. The government is represented by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Matthews of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Criminal Division in Trenton.

The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations, and Harley is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of gun safety and the severe consequences of violating firearms laws.

A special thank you to the Neptune City Police Department, Neptune Township Police Department, Asbury Park Police Department, Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, and Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office for their collaborative efforts in bringing this case to light.
