Colstrip man Dean L. Hodges, 59, has been sentenced for his role in a $686 health care fraud scheme. In a shocking display of greed, Hodges, employed as the Chief Pharmacist for the Kyle Health Center, used his position to steal Hydrocodone and Codeine for his own use between January and October 2013.
According to court documents, Hodges was indicted on February 19, 2014, for Theft in Connection with Health Care, Health Care Fraud, False Statements Relating to Health Care Matters, and Acquiring Controlled Substances by Fraud. He pled guilty to Health Care Fraud on June 30, 2014.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, which took place on October 16, 2014, before Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court. Hodges was handed a lenient sentence, with 2 years of probation and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The investigation into Hodges’ crimes was led by the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case.
Hodges’ crimes have sent shockwaves through the community, with many calling for harsher penalties. ‘This case highlights the importance of holding accountable those who abuse their positions for personal gain,’ said U.S. Attorney Johnson.
The sentencing is a reminder that health care fraud will not be tolerated. Hodges’ actions not only put his patients at risk but also undermined the trust that is essential to the delivery of quality health care.
