Robbery Suspects Face August Trial in Utah
In a string of brazen crimes, two suspects, Dean Salvidor Sainsbury, 25, of Taylorsville, and Kenedi Francis Sarafolean, 22, of Murray, are set to face a jury in August for allegedly robbing three smoke shops in West Valley City and Midvale in May 2013.
According to federal authorities, the indictment, returned by a grand jury in May, alleges that Sainsbury and Sarafolean, who have previous felony convictions, robbed the One Stop Smoke Shop, Smokey’s Discount Cigarettes, and Smokeland, all within a three-day period.
The indictment also alleges that a firearm was brandished during each of the robberies, a serious offense that carries a minimum-mandatory sentence of seven years, with subsequent convictions adding an additional 25 years. In total, the pair faces up to 20 years in prison for each of the three robbery counts, as well as 10 years for possessing a firearm following a felony conviction.
The case is being investigated by the FBI-sponsored Valley Police Alliance Safe Streets Task Force. Sainsbury and Sarafolean are currently in federal custody and have entered not guilty pleas to the charges.
The trial is set to begin on August 12, 2013, in U.S. District Judge Dale A. Kimball’s courtroom. It remains to be seen how the jury will rule in this high-profile case.
