A 27-year-old Chicago man has been sentenced to over six years in federal prison for using a straw purchaser to obtain a firearm.
Dejswah Shaquawn Sibley, a convicted felon, admitted to possessing a Glock 9mm pistol while barred from doing so due to past convictions for theft, residential burglary, and possession of a controlled substance.
The evidence presented at sentencing showed that Sibley used a straw purchaser to obtain the firearm, and he even asked the individual to claim ownership of the pistol for him.
On December 2, 2020, Sibley was pulled over for speeding in Marion, Iowa, where police discovered the loaded pistol in the vehicle.
Sibley was sentenced to 77 months in prison, fined $100, and will serve a three-year term of supervised release after his prison term.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Liz Dupuich and investigated by the Marion Police Department.
