Deldrick L. Spence, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Illinois 2015

A Cairo man has been sentenced to 57 months in prison for his role in a firearm offense that occurred in Belleville, Illinois.

According to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, 28-year-old Deldrick L. Spence was sentenced on January 5, 2015, in United States District Court in East St. Louis, Illinois, on one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon.

Spence was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by the Clair County Sheriff’s Department on December 21, 2013, in Belleville, Illinois. During the stop, a search of the car uncovered a .9mm pistol in the passenger seat side pocket, which Spence admitted to owning.

Spence, who has a prior conviction, pleaded guilty to the charge on September 22, 2014. As a result of the plea, he was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment and a $200 fine, in addition to the 57 months in prison and two years of supervised release.

The investigation into the case was conducted by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, with the assistance of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois. Special Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan S. Drucker prosecuted the case.

Spence’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of firearm offenses in Illinois. According to state law, individuals with prior convictions are prohibited from possessing firearms.
