Demetrius Haynes, Fentanyl Trafficking, Tampa FL, 2023

TAMPA, FL – Demetrius Haynes, 37, of Tampa, is headed to federal prison for 14 years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine, and possession with the intent to distribute both drugs. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday, reflects Haynes’s extensive criminal history, earning him the designation of a Career Offender.

The case began in January 2021, when a joint operation between state and federal law enforcement targeted fentanyl distribution networks operating in the Tampa area. Haynes quickly surfaced as a key player. Undercover agents made a total of six separate purchases of fentanyl and cocaine directly from Haynes throughout January and February of that year, establishing a clear pattern of illegal drug sales.

On February 12, 2021, as Haynes finalized another drug transaction, ATF agents, supported by the Tampa Police Department, raided his residence. The search uncovered a stash of additional cocaine and fentanyl, along with a safe containing approximately $34,000 in cash. Agents also seized a Jimenez Arms .380 caliber pistol, roughly 30 rounds of ammunition, an extended magazine, and an additional $6,850 in currency.

The feds didn’t stop there. In addition to the cash seized during the raid, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) administratively forfeited approximately $46,161 previously identified as proceeds from the drug trafficking operation. Haynes was also ordered to forfeit $6,000 earned from the sale of a Nissan Maxima used to facilitate the conspiracy. The total financial hit to Haynes exceeds $82,000.

Assistant United States Attorney Shauna S. Hale prosecuted the case, highlighting the ongoing commitment to dismantling drug trafficking organizations in the Middle District of Florida. This prosecution falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities.

The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, emphasizing community trust, support for violence prevention organizations, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. Haynes’s lengthy sentence sends a clear message: those who profit from poisoning communities with fentanyl will face significant federal penalties. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the ATF and the Tampa Police Department.
