Washington Man Pleads Guilty to Firearms Charge in Pennsylvania

Derik Carothers, a 29-year-old resident of Washington, Pennsylvania, has pleaded guilty in federal court to violating federal firearms laws.

The guilty plea was made before Senior United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson in the Western District of Pennsylvania. Carothers faced a charge of violating federal firearms laws, as he had previously been convicted of burglary and carrying a firearm without a license.

According to federal law, it is prohibited for a convicted felon to possess a firearm or ammunition. In this case, Carothers possessed numerous firearms and ammunition in October 2019. He was previously convicted on November 7, 2013, of burglary and carrying a firearm without a license, and on March 20, 2017, of carrying a firearm without a license.

The investigation leading to the prosecution of Carothers was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pennsylvania State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Maureen Sheehan-Balchon is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

Derik Carothers is currently awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for March 12, 2025. Under federal law, the potential sentence for this crime is up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both.

The sentencing guidelines will ultimately determine the actual sentence imposed upon Carothers. The seriousness of the offense and his prior criminal history will be taken into consideration when determining the sentence.
