New Orleans Man Sentenced for Drug Trafficking and Gun Charges
A federal judge has handed down a 70-month sentence to a New Orleans man, Desean Christy, for violating federal laws related to gun control and drug trafficking. The 38-year-old will also spend three years under supervised release and pay $300 in mandatory special assessment fees.
The charges against Christy stem from his involvement in a cocaine base distribution ring in New Orleans. He was previously convicted of attempted possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of heroin, and possession of cocaine.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy in communities and supporting community-based organizations that prevent violence.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Dustin Strauss prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
According to court documents, Christy was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his prior convictions. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of a Glock Model 22 semi-automatic handgun.
The sentence was imposed on May 26, 2023 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Christy's convictions include possession with intent to distribute cocaine base, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.
The total sentence, including prison time and supervised release, is 70 months. The $300 in mandatory special assessment fees will also be paid.
As part of the PSN program, communities and law enforcement agencies work together to address violent crime and gun violence. The program focuses on fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, and setting strategic enforcement priorities.
