Deshawn Foreman, Possessing a Firearm as a Felon, Wisconsin 2019

Published June 19, 2020

A Janesville man has been sentenced to federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon. U.S. District Judge William M. Conley handed down the 48-month sentence to Deshawn Foreman, 24, after finding him guilty of violating federal law by possessing a firearm while on state supervision for burglary.

On July 24, 2019, Foreman led Janesville police officers on a foot chase, dropping a .45 caliber magazine during the pursuit. The following day, officers observed Foreman attempting to flee in a car and eventually abandoning it in a wooded residential area. Foreman was apprehended after police found him pointing a .45 caliber Glock firearm at them.

At the time of the offense, Foreman was on state supervision for burglary. His significant criminal history, including prior terms of supervision and rehabilitation programs, did not appear to curb his behavior.

In sentencing Foreman, Judge Conley noted the gravity of the offense, citing Foreman's general disregard for his safety and that of the arresting officers. The judge also considered Foreman's age and the lack of discernable changes in his behavior despite previous rehabilitation efforts.

The charge against Foreman was the result of an investigation conducted by the Janesville Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Taylor L. Kraus handled the prosecution of the case.

Foreman will serve 48 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. The incident serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of violating federal firearms laws.
