Devin A. Lewis, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Wisconsin 2023

Published December 18, 2023

La Crosse, WI - In a shocking turn of events, Devin A. Lewis, a 38-year-old La Crosse resident, has been sentenced to 7 years in prison followed by 5 years of supervised release for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. This conviction marks the latest in a long string of run-ins with the law for Lewis, who has a history of trafficking controlled substances.

On February 2023, Lewis was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by a La Crosse police officer for a traffic violation. However, instead of cooperating with the officer, Lewis jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to flee. After being caught, Lewis physically struggled with the officer to resist arrest.

During the stop, officers found a bag containing over 200 grams of prepackaged methamphetamine and a smaller amount of fentanyl. A thorough examination of Lewis's phone revealed text messages indicating that he was intending to sell these drugs.

Lewis's lengthy criminal history includes numerous prior convictions for trafficking controlled substances, as well as convictions for causing substantial injury to an officer and armed robbery. It is clear that Lewis's actions have had a profound impact on the community, and his sentencing should serve as a warning to others who would engage in similar behavior.

Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson acknowledged that Lewis's conduct was the last link in a chain of criminality and that this activity degrades the community. He also noted that the volume of Lewis's drug dealing extended beyond the level of supporting personal use.

The charge against Lewis was the result of an investigation conducted by the La Crosse Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anita Marie Boor and Steven Ayala prosecuted this case.
