Devin Charles Staller, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Oklahoma 2022
A disturbing case of intimate partner violence came to a close in federal court yesterday as Devin Charles Staller, 24, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for cutting his girlfriend's throat and for illegally possessing a firearm.
The Tulsa man was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge John E. Dowdell after previously pleading guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon in Indian Country and to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
According to the charges, Staller had intent to do bodily harm when he assaulted the female victim with a knife by cutting her throat on June 24, 2020. He further admitted to being a felon in possession of a Montgomery Ward Savage 16 gauge pump-action shotgun, which he had in his possession when police located him at an apartment in Tulsa on July 17, 2020.
Staller's violent past caught up with him yesterday as he was held accountable for his actions. The Tulsa Police Department, FBI, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives conducted the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Fletcher prosecuted the case.
Staller's 70-month sentence is a testament to the justice system's commitment to holding perpetrators of intimate partner violence accountable. The case serves as a reminder that such violence will not be tolerated and that those who commit such crimes will face severe consequences.
The case highlights the importance of supporting victims of domestic violence and holding their abusers accountable. As Acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson stated, 'Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime. My office and our law enforcement partners support victims of domestic violence and will hold accountable their abusers in a court of law.'
Staller's lengthy prison sentence is a significant milestone in the fight against intimate partner violence. It is a victory for the victim and a reminder that justice can be served in the most difficult of cases.
