Dillard Booker, Firearms & Drug Trafficking, Newport News VA, 2022

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Dillard Jamar Booker, 46, is headed to federal prison for six and a half years after being convicted of possessing firearms – including a stolen AR-15 style rifle – while running a cocaine distribution network in Newport News. The sentence was handed down Wednesday by Chief U.S. District Judge Mark S. Davis, bringing a close to a case built on months of undercover work.

According to court documents, Booker had been peddling cocaine throughout the city since at least March 2021. Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia were able to establish a pattern of sales through a confidential informant. Multiple controlled narcotics purchases confirmed Booker’s involvement in the drug trade, paving the way for a raid on his residence.

The search of Booker’s home didn’t just uncover drugs; it revealed an arsenal linked to his criminal enterprise. In addition to the reportedly stolen AR-15, authorities seized other firearms, along with nearly 15 grams of crack cocaine. Evidence found at the scene indicated Booker wasn’t just a street-level dealer, but actively manufacturing and distributing the drug.

“This case highlights the dangerous intersection of firearms and drug trafficking,” said U.S. Attorney Jessica D. Aber. While the official statement focused on collaboration, the reality is Booker used weapons to protect his illegal operation, adding another layer of risk to the streets of Newport News. The ATF’s Christopher Amon, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Division, echoed the sentiment, stressing the agency’s commitment to disrupting these types of criminal networks.

Assistant U.S. Attorney William Homer led the prosecution, successfully arguing that Booker’s possession of the firearms directly facilitated his drug trafficking activities. The case, numbered 4:22-cr-34 in the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, is a stark reminder that those who choose to profit from illegal drug sales will face serious federal consequences. Booker’s 78-month sentence sends a message, though whether it’s enough to deter others remains to be seen.
