A Wasilla man, Dmitry Kudryn, 34, has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in a scheme that defrauded Alaska consumers.

The scheme, which took place in July 2014, involved Kudryn importing furniture manufactured in China and falsely advertising it as having been made in Italy.

Kudryn purchased hundreds of thousands of dollars in wholesale furniture from a Chinese manufacturer and then resold the furniture to retail buyers in Alaska at a significant markup using the Craigslist.com internet marketplace.

The investigation revealed that Kudryn's Craigslist advertisements falsely represented the origin and value of the furniture, leading to the sale of hundreds of sofa sets to individuals in Alaska, including an undercover Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) investigator.

Kudryn was sentenced to one year in federal prison, a $100,000 fine, and the maximum three years of supervised release following his release from custody.

The investigation also revealed that Kudryn was involved in another scheme to obtain refurbished and promotional Apple products, which he repackaged in Alaska and sold as new to overseas buyers using the Amazon and eBay marketplaces.

As part of his plea deal, Kudryn forfeited $586,748.22 in illicit proceeds from this scheme.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) conducted the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of this case.
