Donald Scott Baker, Attempted Receipt of Child Pornography, South Dakota 2019

On June 17, 2019, a Missouri man was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for attempting to receive child pornography during the 2017 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

According to authorities, Donald Scott Baker, 47, of Independence, Missouri, was convicted of Attempted Receipt of Child Pornography.

The conviction stemmed from Baker communicating with someone he believed to be associated with a 15-year-old girl, but who was in fact an undercover agent, for the purpose of meeting the girl to engage in sexual acts.

Baker also requested pornographic images of the minor be sent to himself.

The undercover operation and arrests were a joint effort between the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Rapid City Police Department, and the Pennington County Sheriff’s office.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Collins prosecuted the case.

Baker was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case was a result of an undercover sex trafficking operation that targeted persons willing to pay to have sex with underage girls or boys obtained through the Internet.

Donald Scott Baker, age 47, was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release.

The charges against Baker include Attempted Receipt of Child Pornography.

The crime occurred in 2017 during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.

Donald Scott Baker is a resident of Independence, Missouri.
