Donovan Goodman, Violent Carjacking, Minneapolis MN, 2023

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A brazen spree of armed carjackings terrorized the Twin Cities in late January and February, culminating in a standoff with law enforcement and the arrest of Donovan Goodman, 33, of Minneapolis. Goodman now faces federal charges for his violent acts, which included pointing a handgun with a red laser sight at a Minneapolis police officer.

The chaos began January 30th in Little Canada, when a Ramsey County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to pull over a stolen Ford F150 driven by Goodman. A high-speed chase ensued, with Goodman recklessly driving in the wrong lanes and dodging stop sticks. The vehicle was eventually disabled with a PIT maneuver, but Goodman didn’t stop there. He fled on foot, leaping over a highway barrier and immediately targeting another vehicle. Witnesses reported he approached the stopped car, firearm drawn, screaming, “Get the [expletive] out of the car!” He then made off with that vehicle, the entire incident captured on the victim’s dashcam.

Less than a month later, on February 25th, Goodman again fled from police during a traffic stop in Minneapolis. This time, after a foot pursuit, he allegedly turned on one of his pursuers, a Minneapolis Police officer. Despite being tased, Goodman rolled over and allegedly pointed a handgun, equipped with a red laser sight, directly at the officer, forcing them to take cover. He then vanished again. Shortly after, the victim of *another* carjacking flagged down law enforcement, detailing how Goodman had offered $100 to join his Uber ride, then robbed him at gunpoint.

According to court documents, Goodman had sweet-talked his way into an Uber driven by an unsuspecting driver and occupied by two passengers. Once inside, he allegedly brandished a firearm, aiming it at the driver’s head and demanding everyone exit the vehicle. The driver and passengers complied, leaving Goodman free to steal the car. Law enforcement, tracing Goodman’s cell phone, eventually located him at a St. Paul residence. A search warrant was obtained, and the St. Paul Police Department’s SWAT team moved in to apprehend him.

“Callously putting multiple lives at risk while brandishing firearms, including at a responding law enforcement officer, it is completely unacceptable,” stated ATF Special Agent in Charge William McCrary. U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger echoed the sentiment, saying, “This is a snapshot of the violent acts we are seeing in the Twin Cities on a regular basis.” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara added, “Let this be a lesson that we will not tolerate violent felons that prey on our community, especially those who endanger the police officers who courageously place their lives on the line in the protection of others.”

Goodman, a convicted felon, now faces the full weight of federal prosecution. Charges have been filed, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office promises swift accountability for his actions. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are examining potential connections to other recent vehicle thefts in the area. The stolen vehicles have been recovered, but the emotional toll on the victims remains significant. The case serves as a grim reminder of the rising tide of violent crime plaguing the Twin Cities.
