Drew Johnson, Meth Distribution, Iowa 2020

Published June 19, 2020

Drew Johnson, a 38-year-old man from Clarksville, Iowa, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for attempting to destroy methamphetamine by burning it.

Johnson's prison term was handed down on June 18, 2020, after he pleaded guilty in January 2020 to aiding and abetting the possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. The crime occurred on February 8, 2019, in Clarksville, Iowa.

According to the plea agreement, Johnson was in possession of methamphetamine when police arrived at his home to conduct a search. Johnson, who was outside at the time, admitted to running inside and throwing the methamphetamine into a wood burning stove. He then fought with the officers.

Johnson has an extensive criminal history, including two prior convictions for domestic assault and multiple theft convictions. His history of violent behavior and disregard for the law likely contributed to the severity of his sentence.

Johnson was sentenced in Sioux City, Iowa by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand. He was sentenced to 60 months' imprisonment, which is equivalent to five years in prison. He must also serve a four-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Johnson is currently being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison to serve his sentence. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Emily K. Nydle and investigated by the Clarksville Police Department.
