Dwight Christopher Brown, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, North Carolina 2017
NEW BERN – In a federal court in North Carolina, Dwight Christopher Brown, 33, of Durham, was sentenced to 120 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm. This conviction comes after Brown was found guilty by a jury on February 14, 2017.
The evidence presented during the trial revealed that on January 19, 2016, a woman contacted the Durham Police Department, reporting that her vehicle had been stolen. She claimed that Brown, her ex-boyfriend, had been allowed to use the vehicle during their relationship but had not returned it after January 4, 2016.
On March 3, 2016, officers with the Raleigh Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Brown, who was driving the stolen vehicle. However, Brown slowed and sped up several times before eventually slowing down and jumping out of the vehicle. The officers then pursued Brown on foot, during which another officer observed him carrying a handgun and attempting to load a round into the chamber. Brown then threw the pistol next to a Waffle House and continued to flee the scene.
While in pursuit, Brown ran across the road with oncoming traffic, prompting the officers to run parallel to him until a break in traffic allowed them to cross safely. The pursuing officer yelled at Brown to stop, and he eventually laid down on the sidewalk. Upon his arrest, officers retrieved a .40 caliber handgun that was reported stolen from the perimeter of the Waffle House and next to Brown's lost shoe.
The case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified effort against gun crime. The PSN initiative targets repeat offenders who continually plague their communities.
This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) and the Raleigh Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Peggah B. Wilson and Jacob Pugh handled the case on behalf of the government.
