Bangor Man Sentenced for Credit Union Robbery

BANGOR, Maine: A brazen daytime robbery at the Acadia Federal Credit Union in Bangor shook the community on June 30, 2020.

According to court records, on June 30, 2020, Earl R. Torrence, 44, entered the Acadia Federal Credit Union in Bangor wearing a surgical mask. He approached a teller, told the teller he had a gun and demanded money. He obtained the money and absconded.

Security footage taken outside the credit union minutes before the robbery led investigators to identify Torrence. Shortly after, they apprehended him in his home with money from the credit union.

Torrence, whose full name is Earl R. Torrence, pleaded guilty in February 2021. He was subsequently sentenced by U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. to 37 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Torrence was also ordered to pay $1,950 in restitution.

The FBI and the Bangor Police Department investigated the case, bringing the perpetrator to justice. Torrence's conviction serves as a reminder that law enforcement will not tolerate such violent crimes.

As a result of the robbery, the community has been left to pick up the pieces, and the staff at the Acadia Federal Credit Union have been left shaken. The outcome of this case should serve as a deterrent to anyone considering a similar crime.
