New Haven Man, Edward Lugo, Faces 10 Years in Prison for Gun Charge

A New Haven man has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition, a crime that could land him in prison for up to 10 years and cost him up to $250,000. Edward Lugo, 37, pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. The guilty plea was entered before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert A. Richardson in Hartford.

According to court documents, Lugo possessed a 9mm Kel-Tec Model P-11 pistol and more than 100 rounds of assorted ammunition on September 19, 2018. Lugo's criminal history includes felony convictions in Connecticut and New York for firearm, weapon, drug, larceny, and possession of stolen property offenses.

It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce, which Lugo is accused of doing. The case is being investigated by the Statewide Narcotics Task Force, New Haven Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Margaret E. Maigret and Sarah P. Karwan.

Lugo is scheduled to be sentenced on June 19, at which time he will face a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and up to a $250,000 fine. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
