Edward Snowden Flees Hong Kong, DOJ Pursues Extradition

In a shocking turn of events, Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor accused of espionage, has fled Hong Kong for a third country. The US government had been seeking his extradition based on a criminal complaint filed in the Eastern District of Virginia in accordance with the US-Hong Kong Agreement for the Surrender of Fugitive Offenders.

According to a statement from DOJ Spokeswoman Nanda Chitre, the US had contacted authorities in Hong Kong to seek Snowden's extradition. However, Hong Kong authorities informed the US that Snowden had departed for another country.

The US will continue to discuss this matter with Hong Kong and pursue relevant law enforcement cooperation with other countries where Snowden may be attempting to travel.

Snowden, 30, is wanted for espionage charges, which carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The exact date of his departure from Hong Kong is unknown.

The US government has been seeking Snowden's extradition since June 14, 2013, when a criminal complaint was filed in the Eastern District of Virginia.

The US-Hong Kong Agreement for the Surrender of Fugitive Offenders allows for the extradition of fugitives between the two countries. However, Hong Kong's decision to let Snowden flee has raised questions about the effectiveness of the agreement.

The US government has not disclosed the country where Snowden is currently located, but officials say they will continue to pursue his extradition.
