Feds Charge California Man with Meth Trafficking in New Mexico

In a shocking turn of events, the Albuquerque office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) have taken down a major methamphetamine trafficking operation. Edwin Josue Torres, a 24-year-old from Sherman Oaks, California, is facing federal charges for his alleged role in the operation.

Torres was arrested on Sept. 29, 2016 following a routine traffic stop. During the stop, NMSP seized approximately 38.25 pounds of methamphetamine from Torres' vehicle. The methamphetamine was concealed inside nine individual packages inside two bags in the trunk of Torres' vehicle.

The methamphetamine was seized after NMSP notified HSI about the discovery. HSI then referred the matter for federal prosecution. Torres was charged in a criminal complaint with a methamphetamine trafficking offense and was ordered detained pending trial.

If convicted, Torres faces a statutory minimum penalty of ten years and a maximum of life in prison. The charges against Torres are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent unless found guilty in a court of law.

This case highlights the growing concern of methamphetamine trafficking in the state of New Mexico. The Albuquerque office of HSI and the NMSP are working tirelessly to take down these operations and bring those responsible to justice.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Presiliano Torrez is prosecuting the case. The investigation is ongoing, and further charges may be filed as more information becomes available.
