Grimy Times Exclusive: Efrain Rodriguez Sentenced to 8 Years for Brutal Assault on Fellow Inmate

SCRANTON, Pennsylvania - In a shocking turn of events, Efrain Rodriguez, a 43-year-old inmate at the United States Penitentiary Canaan (USP Canaan) in Waymart, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 80 months in prison for assaulting a fellow inmate with a razor blade fastened to a toothbrush.

According to the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Rodriguez previously pleaded guilty to the assault, which resulted in the victim suffering gruesome slash wounds on both cheeks that required extensive suturing and resulted in permanent scars and disfigurement.

The assault took place while Rodriguez was serving a sentence at USP Canaan pursuant to a 2014 federal conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Judge Robert Mariani found Rodriguez to be a career offender, in consideration of his extensive criminal history.

Assistant United States Attorney Phillip J. Caraballo prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and officers from USP Canaan. Rodriguez's 80-month sentence is to run consecutive to his current sentence.
