ALBANY, NY – Emmanuel Medina, 35, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after a late-night domestic disturbance call exposed a stash of heroin and fentanyl, alongside an illegally possessed handgun. The bust, a joint operation between Troy Police and federal agencies, paints a grim picture of drug distribution fueling street crime in the Capital Region.
According to court documents, Troy Police officers responded to a disturbance June 27th and found Medina, outside a residence, attempting to conceal something within a doorless Jeep Wrangler. Medina initially resisted officers’ commands, but was quickly detained. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded Hi-Point Firearms .380 ACP pistol, a weapon Medina was legally barred from owning due to prior felony convictions.
But the gun wasn’t the only contraband. Officers also discovered a magnetically attached box under the Jeep, stuffed with 350 small bags containing a deadly mixture of heroin and fentanyl – clearly packaged for street-level resale. The indictment alleges Medina possessed the drugs with the intent to distribute, turning a profit from peddling poison within the community.
United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Troy Police Chief Daniel DeWolf announced the indictment last week, but emphasized that these are merely accusations. Medina, already in custody since his June arrest, is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, the evidence suggests a pattern of criminal behavior, raising questions about the scope of his operation and potential accomplices.
If convicted on all charges – unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime – Medina faces a minimum of 5 years, and potentially life, in prison. He’d also be subject to at least 3 years of post-imprisonment supervised release. Sentencing will ultimately be determined by a judge, considering federal guidelines and the specifics of the case.
The investigation, led by the Troy Police Department with assistance from the DEA and ATF, is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and gun violence plaguing cities across the nation, and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.
