Nigerian Man Jailed for Resisting Deportation
Alexandria, LA - Emmanuel Nwankwo, 54, of Nigeria, was sentenced to 24 months in prison for impeding or hampering his deportation.
According to federal authorities, Nwankwo was found guilty of impeding or hampering his deportation after a two-day trial on May 21, 2013. The guilty verdict was reached after witness testimony and documents were admitted into evidence at the trial.
As reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Immigration Enforcement Agents brought Nwankwo to the Alexandria International Airport on December 11, 2012, and attempted to put him on a commercial flight. However, the defendant began yelling and physically resisting officers, which prevented him from boarding the flight due to airline and Transportation Security Administration policies.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Enforcement and Removal Operations conducted the investigation into Nwankwo's actions. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Seth D. Reeg and Cytheria D. Jernigan prosecuted the case.
