Emmitt Martin III, Excessive Force and Cover-Up, Tennessee 2023

MEMPHIS, TN - In a shocking turn of events, Emmitt Martin III, a former Memphis Police Department officer, has pleaded guilty to federal civil rights and conspiracy charges in connection with the tragic killing of Tyre Nichols.

Nichols, a 29-year-old father of a young child, was brutally beaten by a group of police officers during a traffic stop on January 7, 2023, leading to his eventual death. Martin, who was one of the officers involved in the incident, pleaded guilty to counts one and three of the indictment, which charged him with using excessive force and failing to intervene in the unlawful assault, as well as conspiring to cover up his use of unlawful force.

On September 12, 2023, Martin and four co-defendants were indicted on federal charges, including using excessive force resulting in the death of Nichols, aiding and abetting each other in using that excessive force, failing to intervene to stop the excessive force, failing to render medical aid, and conspiring or taking action to cover up their misconduct.

Co-defendant Desmond Mills had previously pleaded guilty to civil rights and conspiracy charges on November 2, 2023. The remaining three defendants are scheduled to face a federal trial on September 9.
