Eric Martin, Methamphetamine Possession, Louisiana 2022

LAFAYETTE, La. - Eric Martin, 36, of Ethel, Louisiana, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation.

Martin was sentenced to 274 months (22 years, 10 months) in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

The case began on July 13, 2022, when members of the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for speeding. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was identified as Martin, who was subsequently questioned by officers after being advised of his Miranda rights.

Martin admitted to possessing marijuana in the vehicle, and a search of the vehicle revealed approximately 26 grams of marijuana on the front passenger seat. However, it was the discovery of 18 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine on the back seat that led to Martin's downfall.

The suspected methamphetamine was sent to the DEA laboratory for testing, where it was confirmed to have a net weight of 16.96 kilograms. Martin's criminal history, which includes convictions for negligent homicide and accessory after the fact to aggravated second degree battery, likely played a role in the severity of his sentence.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys LaDonte A. Murphy and Craig R. Bordelon.

Martin's lengthy prison sentence serves as a warning to those involved in the trafficking of illicit substances, and highlights the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating the opioid epidemic.
