Erik Barner, Cocaine Distribution, St. Petersburg FL, 2023

TAMPA, FL – Erik Barner, 44, of St. Petersburg, is facing serious federal charges after allegedly peddling crack cocaine on the streets. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), alongside the St. Petersburg Police Department, brought the case, alleging Barner was running a small-time distribution operation.

According to a criminal complaint filed in the Middle District of Florida, Barner allegedly sold a total of 63 grams of crack cocaine to a confidential informant over three separate meetings: February 22nd, March 1st, and March 10th of this year. That’s a significant amount for street-level dealing, and federal prosecutors aren’t messing around.

U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the arrest, stating Barner is charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. If convicted, Barner could spend up to 20 years behind bars – a harsh sentence reflecting the federal government’s continued crackdown on drug offenses.

What makes this case particularly damning for Barner is his criminal history. Investigators revealed he already has prior convictions for both trafficking in cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. This isn’t his first rodeo, and the feds are likely to highlight that during sentencing.

Assistant United States Attorney Samantha Newman is assigned to the case and will be responsible for prosecuting Barner. The complaint, while a formal accusation, presumes Barner’s innocence until proven guilty in a court of law. However, given the evidence presented – the multiple sales to an informant and his prior record – the odds are stacked against him.

The ATF’s Tampa Field Division led the investigation, demonstrating the agency’s continued focus on disrupting drug networks, even at the local level. While the quantity of cocaine involved might not be enough to cripple a major cartel, it’s enough to put one man away for a long time and send a message to others looking to profit from the misery of addiction.
